Brrrrr-ick City! There’s a chill in the air and snow in the forecast: no wonder January is National Soup Month! Hot, hearty and delicious, soup is the consummate comfort food on a cold winter’s day. But far too many people in Newark and around the nation are facing this winter with nothing in their kitchen cabinets. That’s why institutions like the St. James AME Church Soup Kitchen, located on MLK Blvd in the Central Ward, are so important.
St. James Soup Kitchen’s Thanksgiving Holiday Distribution
Featured last year on the Food Network show, “Restaurant Impossible,” the St. James Soup Kitchen and its parent company, the St. James Social Service Corporation (SJSSC), provide much needed emergency food services via a daily soup kitchen and food pantry, clothing and housing assistance, wellness and awareness programs, workforce development, and youth programs. Since its inception in 1996, SJSSC has provided services to more than 600,000 people. It’s an organization that truly lives its motto, “helping people is not an option, it is a way of life.”

Want to do your part? A donation of just $50 will provide 3 days worth of food for 5 families, and additional volunteers for daily feedings are always needed. You can even gather some coworkers or friends and volunteer as a group!
